Curator's NoteThe solo exhibition of Greek artist Antonis Giakoumakis at Art Appel Gallery in Athens showcases recent and new, smaller and larger oil on canvas works as well as two new mixed-media sculptures. [...]

The 18 works on display are a constellation of unidentified and enigmatic figures. Deliberately deconstructed to their minimum physical appearance, Giakoumakis' protagonists appear suspended from their corporeal identity and stripped of their unique traits. [...]

Upon closer inspection, all of Giakoumakis' works engage in an exploration of the ephemeral and temporal, where human presence is dissolved and amalgamated with a power emerging from within. [...]

"My portraits carry in them the indelible traces of the universal man in his perpetual effort to escape the dystopian universe surrounding him in order to achieve personal catharsis", the artist explains when reflecting on his work and the way he understands the volatility and strangeness of the polyvocal facets of frailty and mortality. [...]

Vortex is an archive of abstract psychographics, a non-human gathering, an assemblage of energy portraits. Each one of us may be part of them and may even discover an unexpected counterpart without realising it.
